Theme 2015: Writing as a Balancing Act

The writer leaps into a void. He or she wants to tell us something important, but can’t be sure if the message goes through. One can be rejected, forbidden, ignored, misunderstood. What makes the writer go on?

Writers write out alternative worlds, drawing on facts and imagination, but also on their own lives and the lives of those close to them. Doing this, they sometimes venture on thin ice. The writer needs freedom, but at what price?

Writers are not only writers. They are also products, and parts of the marketing effort. Literature, too, is a performing art, but does the attention economy direct our attention away from what literature really is all about?
